First of all, its important to understand that fever is actually one of our bodys defense mechanisms against infection. A certain level of fever is considered acceptable, but that level can vary depending on a childs age, behavior and pre-existing health condition. So, how hot is too hot? Here are some basic guidelines: Infants less than 3 months old … if the temperature is over 100.4 degrees, have the baby evaluated by a physician. Infants 3-6 months old … if temperature is over 101 degrees, have the baby evaluated by a physician. Children over 6 months old … generally, you dont need to call the doctor unless the childs temperature is over 103 degrees - unless there are other symptoms present (see below). If, at any temperature and at any age, your child is excessively sleepy or lethargic or exhibits signs of pain (including a stiff neck) or is unable to keep liquids down, call your doctor or have your child evaluated at the emergency department immediately. Remember, fever is a sign that your child is fighting an infection. Dont panic, but be prepared with appropriate treatment (acetaminophen, plenty of liquids), and be able to recognize when your childs fever may be a more serious matter.
